Produced by one of the oldest and largest producers of the Rioja region, Marques de Riscal, this wine really grabbed our attention. We were expecting something a little lighter in style and upon first sip, well let’s just say we had some different words to express our appreciation.
Our tasting notes: First aromas told us that this wine had some “old world” characteristics with deep dried fruit, earth and smokey cherry which lead to hints of pomegranate, creosote, more dried cherry and earth. A mid-weight wine extending sweet fruit along with fine, supple tannins and firm structure made it truly enjoyable with a finish that lingered nicely.
We let it hang out in the glass for a bit to see how it opened up and every time we re-visited it, there were new and fabulous characteristics that drew us to sip a little more – things like violets and mocha and dried herbs.
John Allen: “A pretty wine, friendly with very fine tannin and intensity.”
Rhett Humphrey: “A classically Spanish wine, made well – I’ll definately be taking some home.”
Terry Knight: “It keeps on going and going and with every taste, it opens up and I get something new.”
Made from 100% Tempranillo, it’s a super food wine and also great for enjoying on a cold winter’s night and with the friendly price of $7.95 we say sip away friends!
