Those “in the know” about hard-to-find and super-prestigious reds have heard the name Heidi Peterson Barrett. The following is copied directly from Wikipedia (with current online red wine prices inserted by us): “Heidi Peterson Barrett is a winemaker who has been responsible for some of California’s most notable cult wines, including Screaming Eagle ($1,400.00), Dalla Valle Vineyards ($89.00), Paradigm Winery ($65.00), Grace Family Vineyards ($170.00), Amuse Bouche ($200.00), Lamborn Family Vineyards ($95.00), Showket Vineyards ($70.00), and Fantesca ($125.00), is a consultant for Diamond Creek, and Niebaum-Coppola, and has her own wine label, La Sirena. – She is the daughter of California wine pioneer Richard Peterson, and is married to Bo Barrett, winemaker at Chateau Montelena of “Judgment of Paris”, which was recently the subject of the motion picture Bottle Shock. Robert Parker [publisher of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate] has on several occasions awarded her wines 100 points and called her “the first lady of wine”. She graduated from UC Davis in 1980 with a B.Sc. in Fermentation Science. Having experienced internships in both the German and Australian wine industries, Barrett became head winemaker for Buehler Vineyards in 1983 at age 25. Following the 1992 vintage of Screaming Eagle, Barrett became a “winemaking star”. We have been offered up to 48 “seductive” bottles of Heidi Peterson Barrett’s 2009 La Sirena “Pirate TreasuRed” ($77.00 / cc 65.45) which we found to be absolutely gorgeous to taste and massively impressive. Packaged in a rum-shaped bottle and shipped in 6-bottle treasure-chest-like boxes, this rare wine will cellar quite nicely and evolve for 6-8 more years. We are lucky to be able to offer it to you! If you have an interest in finding out what “cult wines” are all about, this is an exciting and (relatively…) inexpensive opportunity to add a little glamor to your collection, certainly one that doesn’t come our way very often.

Vino! Notes: – Only at Vino! – This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Grenache and Petite Sirah clearly stands out in the crowd. Complex from any perspective, the incredibly extracted concentration is almost magically matched with a most elegant and supple mouthfeel. Aromas spring from the glass with deep dark espresso and blackcurrant aromas with shades of mocha. Flavors arrive dense and powerful with huge extraction of blackberry and black cherry-like impressions with a lush, voluptuous feel. With touches of smoke and black olive, its velvety tannins round out the finish with a lovely balance. This is a beauty.
Wine Advocate gave 92 points: “The 2009 Pirate TreasuRed is deeper, silkier and a touch more seductive than the 2008. Here the fruit profile tends towards redder fruit, with hints of flowers, mint and tobacco that add complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.” – Antonio Galloni, December, 2011
Wine & Spirits Magazine, “50 Most Influential Winemakers”: “Let’s just state it plainly: In the realm of the Napa cult wine, Heidi Peterson Barrett
is the reigning queen.” – Fall 2004
Elegant Living, “The Divas of Napa Valley”: “Heidi’s winemaking style lends itself so seamlessly to the Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, her proprietery Pirate TreasuRed blend, and dry Muscat Canelli (Moscato Azul) she hand-crafts for La Sirena. The La Sirena Cabernet Sauvignon follows the same winemakingstyle and blend that she made in the past for Screaming Eagle…Without question – Heidi Barrett is a true Renaissance woman.” – August 2010
